Gold Coast Airport Marathon a run-a-way success

The 2011 Gold Coast Airport Marathon has again pushed the benchmark higher with another record breaking event.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon was won by Kenyan runner Nicholas Manza Kamakya in a record time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 1 second (2:10:01) with female Ethiopian runner Goitetom Tesema also braking new ground with a race record time of 2:30:13.

The records continued to fall with the weekend’s events attracting almost 24,800 participants from 72 different countries.

A number of competitors came from international destinations with direct services to the Gold Coast including Malaysia, Singapore, Japan and New Zealand.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon also played host to 19 Commonwealth Games Delegates from Africa here to determine the suitability of the Gold Coast as host of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Gold Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer Paul Donovan said the event remained Australia’s premier marathon event.

“The Gold Coast Airport Marathon has again proved to be a run-a-way success, with record times, a record number of participants and a world-class event to showcase the Gold Coast as the preferred destination for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“Queensland Events Gold Coast has again run a fantastic event that is a significant drawcard to attract visitors to our region.

“As naming rights sponsor of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon for the past nine years, we have worked well together providing a weekend long event which the Gold Coast community fully embrace and which also positions the Gold Coast as a premier international holiday and ‘experience’ destination,” Mr Donovan said.

“Furthermore, we are proud to be part of an event that has such a positive impact on the local community. The economic benefits from the Gold Coast Airport Marathon event are felt right through the community, from hotel and tourism operators, to retailers and other local service providers. The Gold Coast Airport Marathon will provide a significant boost to the local economy,” he said.

The Gold Coast Airport had 55 staff take part in events over the weekend as part of a 120 strong corporate team challenge.
