Getting Here and Away

It is hard to imagine an airport more conveniently located than Gold Coast Airport, situated in the very heart of Australia's number one holiday destination. Gold Coast Airport is located on the Gold Coast Highway at Bilinga on the southern end of the Gold Coast, only five minutes from Coolangatta.

When Flying
Check in times
With extra security now at the airport you are required to check in: 45 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and 90 minutes prior to departure for international flights.

Security Screening
All persons entering security areas such as departure lounges are required to be security checked. All hand luggage will also be screened. Please ensure that you do not carry any metal or sharp objects as these will be confiscated.

Luggage Tags
To ensure your luggage doesn't get mixed up with other travelers, label all your luggage with luggage tags, which can be picked up at the airport near the check in desks. You can also place something distinctive on your luggage that you recognize as being yours, such as a bright ribbon or coloured security belt.

Overseas Visitors
Please note the following facts!

  • Departure tax
    A departure tax of AUD$39 is included in the price of your airline tickets. Exemptions apply to children under 12 years, 24-hour transit passengers or transit passengers who stay longer than a day if departure is delayed by circumstances beyond their control.
  • Driver's licence
    International driving permits are recommended.
  • Electricity
    240/250 volts AC 50HZ. Universal outlets for 110 volts (shavers only) are standard in hotels, apartments and motels.
  • Passport/visas
    Visas are required by all visitors traveling to Australia except for New Zealand passport holders.

The region enjoys a subtropical climate and an average of 300 days sunshine a year.
Spring: September to November 15-25oC / 59-77oF

Autumn: March to May 16-25oC / 61-77oF
Winter: June to August 11-21oC / 52-70oF

Clothing
Casual, lightweight clothes are generally worn on the Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales. A jacket or other suitable outfit may be required in some nightclubs and restaurants. Comfortable shoes are a must for hiking though National Parks.

Medical Services
Standards are high. Overseas visitors should obtain their own medical insurance. Major public hospitals include the;

Private hospitals and 24-hour clinics are available.

Time
The Gold Coast operates on Eastern Standard Time (EST). Daylight saving is observed in New South Wales, however not in Queensland.

Parking
Inexpensive parking is available in busy areas such as Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Southport and Coolangatta. Metered and free parking is generally available at other centres.

Infringements (PINs)
Drivers failing to comply with parking restrictions will be issued a Parking Infringement Notice (PIN). Infringements are issued pursuant to the “Airports (Control of On-Airport Activities) Regulations 1997” and the Australian Road Rules (ARR).
Payment options are listed on the infringement notice or ring 07 5589 1110 during business hours.

Parking Restrictions
Gold Coast Airport is a designated “Restricted Parking Area”, no parking unless otherwise signed.
Public parking is available at Terminals 1, 2 and 3, for domestic and international, short and long term. Please see section on “Parking” for extra information.


Drivers failing to comply with parking restrictions may be issued a Parking Infringement Notice (PIN).

Terminal kerbside (Australian Road Rule, ARR 168)

Drop off and pick up areas are available, but are restricted to 1 minute and the driver must not leave vehicle under any circumstance.

If you enter and exit the short/long term car park within 10 minutes there is no charge.

Other restricted areas

  • Yellow Edge Line (ARR169) on the edge of roads, prohibits vehicles from parking or stopping on roadway, vehicles using these areas may be issued with a PIN.
  • Bus Zones (ARR 183) are restricted to public buses for drop off or pick up and holders of ground transport licences for drop offs only. Other vehicles using these zones may be issued with a PIN.
  • Disabled parking (ARR 203) spots are for the use of people with disabilities with appropriate authorisation, other vehicles using these areas may be issued with a PIN.
  • Loading Zone “Authorised vehicles only 20 min max” (ARR 179) is restricted to vehicles either signed or with dashboard passes doing business with the terminal concessionaires, other vehicles using these areas may be issued with a PIN.
  • No Stopping on verge (ARR 197), vehicles using these areas may be issued with a PIN.
  • No Parking (ARR 168) or No Stopping (ARR 167) with or without exception is for the use of vehicles listed as the exception, other vehicles using these areas may be issued with a PIN.
  • No Parking Area (ARR 168) or No Stopping Area (ARR 167) with or without exception is for the use of vehicles listed as the exception, other vehicles using these areas may be issued with a PIN.
  • Pedestrian crossings (ARR 172) are not to be used for dropping off or picking up passengers, vehicles stationary in these areas may be issued with a PIN.
  • Rental / Hire car area (ARR 185) is for the use of authorised vehicles only, unauthorised vehicles may be issued with a PIN.
  • Taxi Zones (ARR 182) are restricted to taxis, other vehicles using these areas may be issued with a PIN.
  • 2 Hour parking areas (ARR 205), vehicles overstaying time may be issued with a PIN, this includes the area known as “Airport Central”.

Sun Protection
Enjoy outdoor activities without the risk of sun damage by wearing a broad-brimmed hat, a shirt with collar and sleeves and sunscreen on exposed skin. Try to avoid staying outdoors during the middle of the day.

Speed Limit
A 50kmh limit in residential and commercial areas or where otherwise indicated.
A 100kmh limit on highways or where otherwise indicated.
